More Than Just a Childcare: Building Community at Gumnut Gardens 🌿
At Gumnut Gardens, we believe that a child’s learning environment should feel like a "home away from home". This past week, our Jarjums (children) embarked on some very special missions that perfectly showcase how we bring the local community into our daily curriculum.
📦 Mission 1: Little Eco-Warriors at Mitre 10
Our first stop was Mitre 10, where the children practiced their communication skills by asking for recycled materials for our creative investigations. The staff were incredibly welcoming, inviting us into their recycling area to collect large cardboard boxes.
This trip was about more than just boxes; it was a lesson in sustainability, a core pillar at Gumnut Gardens. By repurposing materials, our Jarjums are learning how to make responsible choices for our environment while fueling their imaginative, open-ended play.
🛒 Mission 2: From Market to Table
Next, we headed to IGA with a very special shopping list! We want to extend a huge thank you to our families for collaborating with us to plan the ingredients for our burrito feast.
At Gumnut Gardens, we value parents as a child's first educators. By involving the children in the shopping process, they gain a real-world understanding of where food comes from and the importance of healthy choices—skills they will carry with them long after they leave our care.
🌯 Friday Fun: Family Partnerships in Action
The highlight of our week was welcoming a parent visitor into the Jarjum room to lead a hands-on cooking session. Inspired by the children's interest in running their own "restaurant," our guest helped the children prepare their own burritos.
Through this experience, the children practiced:
Kitchen Safety & Hygiene: Practical life skills in a supportive environment.
Social & Emotional Growth: Practicing patience, listening, and turn-taking.
A Sense of Belonging: Strengthening the bond between home and our centre.
