Early Childhood Educator
Jarjum Room (Preschool)
I am currently studying my Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary). I have been in the education sector for 12 years working with all ages from early childhood to high school and also specialising with children who have additional needs.
My background is in the fashion industry and I love sharing my passion for all things creative with the children. I believe process arts bring out the artist in all children as they see their creations develop over time. Some I have taught children are wood – working, textile printing (tie dying, screen and batik), sewing (hand and with machinery), upcycling old furniture, murals with recyclable loose parts and weaving to name a few.
I am inspired by, aligning my practice and program with philosophies and practices from Reggio Emilia (Italy), Scandinavian Forest schools, Vygotsky and the more recent Beach Kindy’s. I foster a sense of social justice, love of learning and literature, creativity, self-confidence, persistence and resilience in children both within our preschool community and also out in our local community.
At Gumnut Gardens we have implemented a Bush Kindy program with the preschool group twice a week. As the year progresses the children are taking the lead on our explorations of the park choosing the destinations and which aspects of their natural landscape and environment that appeals for their play, using features and landmarks to create their own boundaries. It is wonderful to observe how the change of seasons affect the park environment and how this changes the groups experiences and play, be co-learners with the children appreciating and respecting our environment and the animals that we encounter and learning to ‘be’ in and within nature, absorbed in the experience with no agenda. We also aspire to begin a Beach Kindy program in the warmer months learning through experiencing our uniquely beautiful coastal and harbour environment.
An aspiration I have is to advocate for the importance of children in the early childhood education and care environment connecting with their local communities and natural environments by assisting, collaborating with and educating other educators in the sector to be confident in their knowledge and abilities in taking children in their care ‘out the gate’. I am loving learning from an esteemed educator and academic in our sector who I am inspired by, makes me question and critically reflect on my personal philosophy and teaching practices that are eternally growing and evolving with time and experience. I hope to inspire colleagues in the future in a leadership role at Gumnut Gardens.
